Crawley councillors permitted seven parking spaces to be made on a 40m stretch of grass verge.
The Development Control meeting on Tuesday (September 1) voted for the proposed lay-by spaces on the eastern side of Ifield Drive from 18 Selham Close to 111 Ifield Drive.
A planning document said the highways authority, West Sussex County Council backed the scheme.
It added: “The proposed environmental improvement works would result in encroachment onto the existing grass verge along Ifield Drive. However, it is considered that this loss would be in the wider public interest as there would be significant benefit in terms of an improvement in the visual environment and the parking and access arrangements in the area.
“The area of amenity space set further back from the road and verge (in between no.’s107 and 109 Ifield Drive) would not be affected as it would be retained and would continue to make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the surrounding area. The parking scheme would also help to protect and enhance the remainder of the green space and streetscene from inappropriate car parking.”
The development was subject to final confirmation from the county council.
