A week of birthdays

Another hot day arrived, and I was pleased that this afternoon I would be in the air conditioned Hawth for a performance of ‘Love Letters’ by the Louise Ryrie School of Dance and Drama.

The show followed the stories of those whose lives have been touched by the WW1. A Mother writes to her son, a child writes to their father. The letters discovered in a box long after the authors have passed away. A rather difficult and sad theme you might think, but as always shows by this dance company are vibrant, descriptive entertaining and brilliantly choreographed, a cast of 250 from 2years old to 60+. Tiny children dressed as poppies and Tin soldiers brought oohs and ahhs from the audience, through to powerful and dramatic scenes by young adults and seniors.

Next day off to the Town Hall to welcome the Judges for Crawley in Bloom, the very professional Judges, spent the day with Town Hall staff visiting the wonderful displays throughout the Town including, street barrier displays, Flowers Towers and window boxes at The Town hall and many lovely schemes organised by Community groups through Let’s Face it.

Many thanks to our sponsors and volunteers for dressing our Town in glowing colours and blooms. The very professional Judges, gave nothing away and we now wait to hear if we have been successful this year.

Later the same day I again had the pleasure of attending a 100th birthday celebration for a wonderful lady, who still lives in the house she moved into 50+ years ago. There really is something in the Crawley air that keeps our residents blooming past this magical number. Congratulations Dorothy. No duties for me, at the end of this week, as I joined my family in Bedfordshire for my own ?? birthday celebrations and my Grandson’s 6th birthday Toby’s birthday fell on the last Monday of term, and for the first time I had the pleasure of walking him to school in the village where he lives.

Returning to Crawley that evening, I began my preparations for the Borough Council Meeting on Wednesday, the first full Council I have chaired. It was a very hot airless evening, at times the hot air was added to, a good attendance in the public gallery, with some very searching questions, kept members on their toes, and led to a very interesting debate on the Local plan, after several amendments have been moved, debated and voted on, a slightly amended Local Plan was passed. The Guillotine was outvoted twice and the meeting finally ended at 11pm. The Leader and New Cabinet were satisfied and even the Chuckle Brothers seemed in high spirits.
